Dog showing can be FUN, not just minding dogs all day with mum and dad. The most important criteria is getting involved in some aspect that suits your personality. Some of the things shows have to offer range from Junior Handlers, Stewarding, Ticket Writing, right through to the organising and running of an All Breeds Championship Show.
The Junior Kennel Club of Victoria are always looking for enthusiastic members to join their committtee. Any DOGS Victoria member aged between 16 and 26 is more than welcome to join this club. You could help run their championship show and Junior Dog Handlers finals held in July each year. Some of you are under the impression that if you show in the handlers classes you are not eligible to be a committee member on the Junior Kennel Club, this is not so.
The Junior Dog Handlers competition is a wonderful opportunity for young members to exhibit in their age group with their dogs at most shows during the luncheon break. These classes are designed to promote the dog world at a junior level and to encourage confidence, friendships and most of all good sportsmanship. Once qualified the handler may exhibit again with a different breed. There are no tricks involved in these classes and you are encouraged by the judge to exhibit your dog as you would in the conformation classes.
The Victorian finalist chosen at the Junior Kennel Club show will go on to compete against other finalists from all over Australia. The national winner will travel to the UK to represent their country at the Crufts Dog Show the following year.
