Chief Executive Elizabeth White was quoted in the Sunday Age on 23 November in an article about the realities of "backyard" breeders. Click here to read the article on The Age website and visit our DOGS Victoria in the news page for more articles.

Many DOGS Victoria members have been affected by the bushfires. Please help by donating to our appeal or entering your dog/s in the International Virtual Dog Show.

Promoting purebreds

A new purebred puppy flyer is now available to distribute to your vet or other animal health professional. It was originally developed for an opthamologist clinic, so there is an emphasis on eye health. If you would like a copy please download it directly from the website or contact the office to have copies posted out to you.

Do you have an idea for a simple pro-purebred or DOGS Victoria message? Let us know and send us any photos that will help promote your statement by sending them to our Marketing Assistant.

Dog owners the world over have been buzzing with the recent show on the BBC, also posted on youtube and followed up by channel SBS, calling into question the ethics and practices of purebred dog breeders in Australia.

Golden Retrievers were particularly singled out by a representative of the Australian Veterinarian Association (AVA) who implied the breed has hip problems more prolifically than other types of dogs and is particularly prone to Hip Dysplasia. In truth, Golden Retriever breeders throughout Australia have been working to lower the incidence of joint problems through very careful and strict breeding regulations.

This response was sent out to Victorian and Australian media. Please use it as an example if you would like to send something out to your local media as a letter to the editor on behalf of yourself and/or your breed.

Responses to negative and un-informed publicity for dogs

All dog attacks reported in the local media have been and will continue to be followed up with information on the importance of training your dog and educating people (both adults and children) about dogs. As the media focus on the problem of ill-mannered dogs, we will continue to send out information focused on the solution.

If any members read any negative articles, we encourage you to write a letter or email to the publication sharing your ideas, but please try not to write it in anger and stick to the facts. If you would like to, please send them to us as well and we will respond directly to the organisation.
