Brief History
The deep history of the Ibizan Hound is linked to early records written on papyrus or depicted on the walls in tombs of ancient Egypt, which show dogs of this style being used to hunt and as very revered companions of the Pharaohs, priests and nobility. It is believed that about 2000 BC, Phoenician traders spread them through the western Mediterranean area including the islands of Ibiza and Formentera, where they developed into the breed we know today. They are used to find and hunt small game, primarily rabbits, on the rocky slopes of these islands, where they were quite isolated so stayed genetically very pure.

Average Life Span
When considering a dog please realise that you are taking it on for its lifetime.

The average life span is from 12 to 15 years

Temperament
Dignified, intelligent, independent. Kind, alert and curious, but usually very cautious with strangers. Never aggressive.

General Breed Description
The Ibizan Hound is an exotic, unusual looking dog, being a lightly but strongly built, tall and narrow dog with outstanding agility and the unique ability to jump vertically up to 2 metres from a standstill. They hunt by sight, sound and scent, using their big ears to help hear rabbits hiding in the rocks, and with great stamina and perseverance.

They are an obliging breed but easily crushed by rough handling or shouting, due to his acute hearing and sensitive nature. A gentle and positive approach to training is needed and will result in a loveable housemate that gets along well with other dogs, is good with family, is not destructive and quiet and controlled in the house.

They are a versatile hound, and can be used for hunting, lure coursing, retrieving game, conformation showing, for obedience and also as a pet and companion.

Colours are white, chestnut or fawn, or any combination of these. There should not be any black colour present.

Coat and Care Requirements
There are two coat varieties, being short coated or rough coated. The short coat is short, glossy and close fitting and the wire is harsher and a little longer.  Both are easily maintained with a good brush weekly and an occasional bath, so this is a low maintenance breed. They should be walked daily.

Size
Height: 56 to 74cms (22-29ins).

Health
All breeds have individual health issues. When speaking to breeders it is recommended you enquire about breed’s health and what health testing the breeder does. The Ibizan Hound is generally a healthy breed. However, health conditions will occur occasionally.

Suitability
The Ibizan Hound is very suitable as a family pet but does need good security due to his jumping ability.
