Brief History
The English Springer Spaniel, like other spaniels, is believed to have originated in Spain, but was developed in Britain during the 19^th century. Recognised as a breed in England in 1903, the English Springer Spaniel was traditionally used for flushing and retrieving game. The breeders needed a fit dog that could range far and wide to perform his task. This is the tallest of all the land spaniels, able to cover rough ground quickly. Springers earned their name by their practice of 'springing' forward to flush the game into nets.

Average Life Span
When considering a dog, please realise that you are taking it on for its lifetime.

The average life span is 12 to 14 years.

Temperament
Springers are biddable, friendly and have a happy disposition, with a sense of humour. They are an affectionate family pet and have a willingness to work. The typical Springer’s temperament is that of a loving, gentle (though active) dog. They should not be timid.

General Breed Description
The English Springer Spaniel is an active dog who thrives on the company of humans. They have a willingness to please and thus are easily trained. English Springer Spaniels are versatile in whatever role they play, from family pet to working in the field or in drug detection, as a therapy dog or one competing in such sports as Obedience, Scent Work, Agility and Conformation dog shows.

In colour they may be liver (dark brown) and white, black and white, or tri colour, being either of those combinations with tan markings.

Coat and Care Requirements
The English Springer Spaniel coat, while of moderate length, with fringing on the ears, legs and belly, can easily be maintained by regular brushing and combing, along with routine bathing. Some owners may choose to take the dog to a groomer to cut the length of hair to reduce maintenance.

Size
Height: Males and Females approximately 51cms (20ins).

Health
All breeds have individual health issues. When speaking to breeders it is recommended you enquire about the breed’s health and what health testing the breeder does. The English Springer Spaniel is generally a healthy breed; however health conditions do occur occasionally. These may include Progressive Retinal Atrophy (cord1-PRA), Hip Dysplasia (HD) and Elbow Dysplasia.

Suitability
The English Springer Spaniel is an active dog that needs regular exercise and mental stimulation. Training from a young age builds a bond with humans and the Springer’s willingness to please, combined with consistent training, will result in an obedient family member. He will be an energetic companion on family hikes and other outings and enjoy a game of fetch. Springers are very people-oriented, so they will not be happy as full-time kennel dogs. They make ideal family pets for those with an active lifestyle. They are good with other dogs and cats, so long as they are well socialised and introduced to each other at an early age.
